NOT WORKING...

Well hello there.  How's everybody doing today?  Good I hope.  Sorry for the lack of blogging around here, it's been a really hectic few weeks.

Let's see we had some problems with the weather, three digit temps for a few weeks which killed just about every bit of grass and plants I own, then we had a horrible storm that came through last Saturday.  Knocked out the electric for a while and took out A LOT of trees and a few other things around town.  There was quite a bit of damage and sadly one person was killed during the storm.  Life is just so fragile.

In the midst of all of this we have had a revival at church, meaning we attended A LOT of church...that part I LOVED.   I love church.  It's the highlight of my week.  There were several real life healings that took place and every body has come away refreshed and renewed in the Spirit.

Now onto some things around the house.  You may have noticed the title to this post "NOT WORKING" and are wondering whatever could I mean.  No, I have not quite my day job (although I've thought about it), hahaha.  In reality I still have a job, it's the dining room that is just NOT WORKING.  I have made some changes and have much more to do but the whole thing is just not working for me.  It's just not my taste or my style and sadly I am probably going to have to live with it for a while.  Money is tight and time is tighter!!!

We started with this...

Loved the wall color...at first.  In the day light it was gorgeous...at night, not so pretty.  It felt like a dungeon.
So I repainted (Beige Buckhorn by Colorplace)...(this room gets very little natural light so I wanted something lighter...something more airy...

Looking at these pictures, I should've kept the darker color...I liked the amount of contrast between the dark walls and light trim. I will be painting the windows and trim a lighter, brighter white, which I think will give me the contrast I am looking for.  I hope!

I changed out the pictures, got a new rug, got new curtains (which need more length and will be remedied, at some point) and found a Duncan Phyfe style table and chairs...

But guess what...

I HATE IT!!!...While I believe I achieved the vintage feel and look I was going for...a look that matches the age of my home, It's just NOT my style or taste...Yes, I found out that I don't quite love that look like I thought I would.  Have you ever done that?  Designed a room, but then didn't love it?

I'm simply a more modern girl....and this is just NOT WORKING for me.

I want something a little more contemporary...more modern...something that flows better with my living room...which can be done, but it's probably going to be a while as money and time don't grow on trees...at least in my part of the country...haha.

In the meantime, I am open to suggestions from all of you fabulous designers out there.  What would you do with this room?  Would you scrap everything and start over?  Would you keep some things?  If so, what?  What colors would you use to give this room a more light and airy feel and more modern appeal?  Talk to me people, TALK.TO.ME!!!

  1. Oh I love the table and chairs, so sorry that it isn't your style. I would try adding a little more color with accessories. How about a really fabulous runner in a modern fabric pattern that you love and then some contemporary accessories. They can be simple vases or bottles found at GW or the Thrift store. Modern accessories change everything. Good luck. Hugs, Marty

  2. I think your table and chairs and also your china cabinet are very pretty. One suggestion might be to change the fan out for a more interesting light fixture.

  3. I'd say add some color to the walls (you could keep it light), change the draperies for a more modern look, and maybe paint some of the furniture! The pieces are lovely, but if it's not your style, why not change it? And maybe something like a light fixture with a drum shade would help you to achieve a more modern look. Good luck!
